Seven Lucky Gods, Bristol, UK – Review

I’m a fan of small plates of food. Mainly through greed so I can order more range of dishes to try. Seven Lucky Gods at Wapping Wharf was the ideal place for Friday friends dinner with four hungry ladies. We practically ordered the whole menu. And in hindsight, we should have just faced the facts and just ordered the whole menu because everything was so flavoursome and perfectly put together.

We were celebrating a friend’s 30th, so having small plates to nibble at between gossiping was perfect. Knowing how good a couple of dishes were before visiting when ordering, straight away ordered double dishes. When you see them, you’ll understand!

Nasu Dangaku – Miso Charred Aubergine and Pickled Vegetable Salad. Smokey creamy aubergine slices with the sharpness and crunch from the vegetables, for a lovely light fresh dish paired with the more naughty delicious fried items we ordered.

Chicken Katsu Curry Arancini, Aged Parmesan and Kewpie Mayo. DOUBLE DISH!! You’ll want to order as many of these beauties as you possibly can! With two arancini coming in a portion, you might even want to order a portion to yourself and not share! Crispy shell with tender chicken mixed with rice and classic katsu sauce, which you’ll have to agree that sounds pretty darn fabulous.

Spicy Korean Fried Chicken with Sesame and Green Onion. DOUBLE DISH!! I love some fried chicken. And this glistering mound of crispy, saucy tender chicken, is the dream dish. Both portions we ordered went so quickly, could have been tempted into a third plate. No one would ever regret ordering more fried chicken.

Squid Karraage, Sichuan Salt and Pepper with Garlic Kewpie. This should have been a double dish order but was filling up at this stage.  Piping hot, crispy nuggets of tender squid to be slathered in the garlic mayo. The type of dish done at so many places, so simple but more often and not, a disappointment, this version should be held up as to the way it should be done. Perfect.

Honourable mentions that gotten eaten before being photographed.

Charred Edamame, Shichimi and Lemon. Smokey and sweet tender beans, to be popped from their scorched pods with all the warmth from the chilli. Far too moreish and the pot disappeared in no time. Make sure you order some with a beer, while you look over the menu.

Curry Fries, Kewpie and Shichimi. Great dish of katsu curry sauce with mayo and chilli all on top of hot crisp chips. What more do you want? Addictive and comforting. And great to mop up the Korean chicken sauce with!

Farm Greens Ohitashi, Local Spinach, Ginger, Sesame and Ponzu.  Greenery to not feel so naughty, wilted spinach with the citrus dressing and ginger for an excellent side dish alongside all the other flavoursome delicious with its simple clean notes.

Sweet Endings

You didn’t think I wasn’t going to try a dessert??

Double Chocolate Ice Cream Sando and Peanut Butter Crunch. Normally with caramelised bananas, but they weren’t good enough to be used, but to be honest, I was ok without them. Dense chocolate sponge sandwiching, mousse-like ice cream for a double hit of chocolate goodness. With ridiculously addictive peanut butter, adding a great crunch and nuttiness that goes oh so well with the chocolate.

Head on down and get ordering. Arancini and Fried Chicken as a minimal and you won’t be sorry!
