The Bristol Hotel has one of the best spots for people-watching in the city, I discovered recently when tucking into my Sunday roast. Looking out to the harbourside, you see all sorts of walks of life, especially as the 10k race was on while I was having my leisurely roast, trying to not make eye contact with the hobbling runners.
I was invited to try out the new roast by the River Grille, where previously they were running a carvery, it’s now table service and at £23.50 for three courses, it’s an absolute steal. The light and airy restaurant had a lovely atmosphere on Sunday with a couple of baby shower afternoon teas, big family meals, as well as couples enjoying a lazy Sunday, whilst a pianist provided the chilled soundtrack.
With a whole host of different dishes catering for a range of dietary needs and tastes, the menu is sure to please the whole family. My friend went for the Prawn and Crayfish Cocktail on Soda Bread and for me, the Caesar Salad. Crispy salad leaves, with fresh little anchovies nestled throughout, plenty of parmesan and crispy croutons to soak up the creamy dressing. My friend loved the plump prawns and crayfish in her starter, a nice take on the classic prawn cocktail salad.
For the main event, I went for the Topside Beef option and we were wowed by the vast amount and range of side dishes the roasts came with. Roast potatoes, honey-roasted parsnip and carrots, spring greens, cauliflower gratin, braised red cabbage and Yorkshire puddings, as well as lashings of gravy. My friend ordered the roast pork, which came as the crispiest slice of pork belly I’ve ever seen. A really nice amount of crackling around the tender pork. The servings of all the sides and meat were very generous, good quality and cooked well. Would be perfect for a big family lunch with all the generous portions, you’re not in danger of going hungry!
Everyone knows you have a separate dessert stomach and that is the reason we were able to try the delicious desserts after just a savoury feast of a main course. I picked the decadent Chocolate Mousse with Brandy Cream and my friend the Apple Custard Tart. Mine was everything you would expect, rich, smooth and a hint of booziness, with the fresh fruit to cut through.
The Apple Custard Tart had a delicate pastry filled with plenty of tender apple slices, topped with silky custard which had been bruleed to a crisp shell. I had to steal a spoonful or two to have a try!
The staff were so welcoming and friendly and would a family occasion a special event with their attentiveness. The Sunday roast is such good value for the quality and would please the fussiest eater or in our case, greedy friends!
Thanks to River Grille for my invitation and for the lovely time. If you want to try the roast for yourself, call The River Grille direct on 0117 900 7844 to make a reservation.
I was invited to try the Sunday roast with a plus one, however, all opinions and thoughts are my own.
