BOX-E Restaurant, Bristol, UK – Review

What do you get if you cross a shipping container with a super-talented husband and wife team? Why BOX-E of course! A tiny 14-cover restaurant in 2 shipping containers nestled in the foodie hub of Bristol Wapping Wharf. It was a long-awaited visit to this Michelin-starred restaurant, so I was super excited that my friend Kate, picked it as the location to celebrate her 40th birthday with friends. The date being in my diary for nearly a whole year,  I can tell the levels of anticipation were high.

There is a 4 seater space at the kitchen table, which is the ideal spot for any foodie to sit to watch Head Chef and Owner Elliot and his small team (there’s not much space at all) create their wonderful dishes. You might even pick up a pointer or two!

When faced with their wonderful menu, there were some tough decisions to make, but I think I picked a cracking range of dishes to try and ones that will stay with me for a long time to come.

To start, Cornish Plaice, Charred Corn, Black Truffle. Crisp, tender perfectly cooked plaice, with smokey buttery charred corn and earthy black truffle. I tend not to go for the fish option, but couldn’t say no to this beautiful combination. With all of the dishes, as soon as I finished, was immediately sad there was no more and wanted to eat that dish over and over again.

I have a soft spot for duck, so always drawn to any dish on a menu that contains it. For my main course the Breast of Duck, Cannellini Beans & Chard. Glazed chard on top of the rich glazed duck slices, with a salsa verde to cut through the richness along with the clean fresh flavour of the beans. Perfect for the slightly autumn-chilled evenings to warm up with.

To close this perfect meal, one of the most perfect desserts I’ve ever had. Cinnamon and Brown Sugar Pannacotta with Apricots and Candied Orange. I rarely have pannacotta’s as tend to find them overset with gelatine and a firm jiggle. But this was utter perfection, silky soft, barely set but enough to hold its domed shape. With the freshness of apricots and the perfumed sweetness of the candied orange. This will be a hero dish for many, many years to come. Can I have one sent to me at my desk now, please?

As soon as the meal was over, we all wanted to eat it all over again for its utter deliciousness and perfection. Will definitely be returning to try more dishes! Thanks to the team for making it such a wonderful evening for Kate’s birthday, what a wonderful way to celebrate with great friends and great food!
