Cheddar Cheese and Marmite Twist Recipe

Love or Hate it, you won’t be able to resist these addictive pastry twists. This recipe for Cheddar Cheese and Marmite Twists will convert any Marmite haters, as the saltiness and depth of flavour of the Marmite with mountains of sharp extra mature Cheddar cheese twisted through buttery flakey puff pastry and an extra sprinkle of parmesan is out of this world.

These twists are a great addition to a picnic selection, a savoury afternoon tea or even as an addition to a lunch box. They are really quick to whip up and kid-friendly as not too messy but will love creating the swirls with the mixture. I went for a dusting of parmesan cheese on top of my swirls however, if you want to dial up the cheese quota on these twists, then you can sprinkle them with even more Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese, and then you get some delicious crispy cheese nibbles as chef perks when they are ready to be plated up.

I like to serve the twists with a chunky chutney for a Ploughman’s style lunch but also work with a chilli tomato sauce, they are versatile to work with any chutney or sauce you would have with a cheeseboard or grilled cheese toastie.

Top Tip – if the Marmite is too thick to spread on the pastry base, stand the jar in a cup of hot water while you roll out the pastry to thin out the Marmite to make it more spreadable.

Description

Makes 8 Twists

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 320g Puff Pastry, shop bought or homemade
  • 2tbsp Marmite
  • 125g Extra Mature Cheddar Cheese, coarsely grated
  • 1 Free Range Egg, beaten
  • 25g Parmesan, finely grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200C and line two baking trays with parchment paper.
  2. Roll the puff pastry to approx, 350mm x 230mm rectangle. With the shortest side of the pastry nearest to you, spread the Marmite lightly over the bottom half of the pastry rectangle. If the Marmite is too thick, stand the jar in a cup of hot water while you roll out the pastry to thin out the Marmite to make it more spreadable.
  3. Sprinkle the Cheddar Cheese over the Marmite half and bring the top pastry down and over to cover the cheese and the Marmite half to be covered, lightly pressing down to seal.
  4. Cut in half lengthways, then in 8 strips in total. Holding each end of the pastry, twist the pastry until the filling is swirled, place it on the prepared tray and continue through the rest of the strips. Place 4 twists on each tray and spaced out.
  5. Brush each twist with beaten egg and sprinkle over with the Parmesan cheese. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden and flakey.  Allow to cool slightly before serving with the dip of choice.
